A catastrophe. The theater is full, but the actors from the Krimicompany are standing in a bus on a closed freeway, complete with stage set. It is the 856th performance of the shocker "Der Mönch mit der Klatsche".
Only assistant director Karin Tor and prop master Klaus Konski have driven ahead in their own car. Now they stand in front of the audience. They are short of money and urgently need the evening's fee. They know the lines, they have heard them 855 times. So they decide to play all the roles themselves. With a few costume pieces and props, with recorded music and the few effects they have with them. In wild improvisation, they jump from role to role and conjure up a wacky, comedic crime show on stage that threatens to fail again and again. But with daring twists and turns, the two manage the impossible.
Fans of Edgar Wallace crime thrillers will recognize the typical elements. There are mad murderers, a bizarre butler, a damsel in distress and a lovable but scatterbrained investigator from Scotland Yard. "The Monk with the Clapper" is a loving reminder of the creepy and charming films from the sixties. And at the same time a fast-paced comedy from today, with two actors playing for survival.
