During an air raid on Tokyo, the mother of twelve-year-old boy Mahito Maki (voice in the original Japanese: Soma Santoki) is killed. When his father then marries his deceased wife's younger sister and moves his family out of the city and into the countryside, Mahito has a difficult time. He is not at all happy with the new family situation. He soon comes across a mysterious tower and a talking gray heron (Masaki Suda), who surprisingly tells him that his mother is still alive and is being held captive in this strange structure. When Mahito's stepmother also disappears, the young adventurer sets off on a journey to the mysterious tower. He discovers a magical world full of fantastic creatures. But there are also a few dangers lurking for Mahito on his journey...
