THINKING OF FREEDOM AT NIGHT

Tragicomedy about the value of freedom by and with people who have experienced imprisonment.

The café "Die Nacht" is no ordinary neighborhood pub. Here, tradition meets chaos, and the guests have long been more family than strangers. Sascha, fresh out of prison and in rehab, wants to finally get her life together. Arthur, a former political prisoner, is enjoying his retreat into the private sphere, and David, sensitive but full of strength and wit, wants to leave his painful past behind him in order to be there for others without compromise. "Die Nacht" is their meeting place, their home, their second home.

Merve, the only waitress in Berlin who doesn't want to be an actress, keeps the group together - loyal, warm and always ready to listen. But when money disappears from the restaurant one day, Merve's life is turned upside down. She suddenly has to prove her innocence and defend her reputation. The neighborhood is boiling and although Merve takes a level-headed approach, everything escalates until even Merve's son is caught in the line of fire. A small misunderstanding turns into an explosive battle for justice to the death. The boundaries between "those on the edge" and those who perhaps thought they were overconfident blur, and nothing remains as it was.

An evening that tells stories written by life: based on interviews and improvisations by people who were shaped by their time in prison, the result is a play that combines laughter and thoughtfulness. Under the direction of Konstantin Frank, the actors, together with Maria Agni and Selda Kaya, bring their fictionalized biographies to the stage - stirringly honest, surprisingly humorous and deeply touching.
