Band Project (Calvin Russell)
Calvin Russell's music is characterized by a direct alternation between straightforward, powerful Texas blues, roots rock and expressive singer-songwriter folk.
The outlaw, who spent some time in prison and only came to musical success late in life, cited the fight for dignity, respect and acceptance as the most important intention of his music-making: "I went through hell on earth, and you can never get over that pain (...) no matter how great your success."
The music journalist Heinz-Jürgen Rippert wrote in an obituary:
"Calvin Russell's life-scarred face quickly imprinted itself on one's mind. His voice was hard, rough and his songs seemed authentic. The songs are about life outside the established classes in the USA, beyond the glossy pages that are so often presented in the media. They tell of life on the streets, in prisons and the longing for dignity and a little happiness. It is no coincidence that the singer-songwriter has been described as the Charles Bukowski of music."
