Lecture and book presentation by Ina Roß. Talk with Olivia Jagiella (art historian) and Gabriel Schimmeroth (MARKK)
Not all visitors come to the MP Tribal Museum, founded in 2013, because of the exhibitions
in Bhopal, India. In her book "The Conquest of the Museum", cultural manager Ina Roß shows how visitors use the place for dates, picnics, "chilling" with friends, for theater and dance performances and as a backdrop for selfies - and thus build an emotional relationship with the museum. For these non-exhibition-related uses, the focus is on the leisure and recreational potential or - as in the case of the lovers - the institution's guarantee of intimacy. The museum thus becomes a counter-model and compensation for everyday life in Bhopal. In other words, an unusual building that proves to be a dynamic social space whose uses are co-determined by the visitors themselves. The museum model offers ideas for our discussions about the "future of museums in times of crisis" and generally about "cultural institutions as third or social spaces in the city".
