A poet has published a poem about a lone hunter he recently observed in the mountains. Josuke Misugi, who recognized himself as the hunter in the mountains, then contacts him. He sends the poet three letters in which three women who are important to him comment on the long-standing relationship he had with his sister-in-law Saiko. A relationship that nobody but the two of them knew about, at least that's what they thought. But now it turns out that his wife Midori has known about it for a long time - and draws the consequences in her letter. In her farewell letter, Saiko herself struggles with her longstanding guilty conscience. And Shoko, Saiko's daughter, also doesn't want to see her uncle again because she has found out about her mother's secret from her diary.
One man between two women - five glances at the same facts. Yasushi Inoue's 1949 novel could be set anywhere and at any time: Modern people betray each other, four lives turn out to be lies. In the end, there is a dead woman and a successful businessman has become a lonely hunter in the mountains.
For this chamber opera, which premiered at the Bregenz Festival in 2018, Austrian composer Thomas Larcher develops his sounds from the musical germ cells: a rhythm, a step, a scale and a song that sometimes falls almost completely silent, sometimes explores the limits of the human voice.
