Cool Japan 2025 - Japanese theater from Nō to Kabuki

This year's "Cool Japan" festival is all about Japanese theater with a program for adults and children. While exciting lectures give adults an insight into the art forms of Nō and Kabuki and the art of Japanese mask making, children can make koi fish out of paper (origami) and have their faces painted in open workshops. There will also be a traditional Japanese dance performance, a paper theater play (Kamishibai) with Annette Huber and students from the Japanese school in Hamburg will perform a children's theater play.

Program

11.30 a.m.: Lecture - Introduction to Japanese theater by Prof. Annegret Bergmann - Moderation: Dr. Carolin Becke, large lecture hall

11.30 am: Guided tour for children and families with curator Ricarda Brosch (Department of East and South Asia), meeting point: foyer

12.45 pm: "Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees". Kabuki video performance (song, pantomime and dance) - welcome by the Japanese Consul General Shinsuke Toda, large lecture hall

1 p.m.: Japanese paper theater (Kamishibai) for children with Annette Huber, Kamishibai Salon Hamburg, Beim Goldenen Turm

1.15 pm: Guided tour for adults with curator Ricarda Brosch (Department of East and South Asia), meeting point: foyer

2 p.m.: Traditional Japanese dance performance (Nihon Buyo) by Chihoco Yanagi, large lecture hall

2.30 pm: Concert by the Laeiszhalle Academy, Beim Goldenen Turm

3 p.m.: Lecture "The art of Kabuki mask painting" by Prof. Annegret Bergmann - Moderation: Dr. Carolin Becke, large lecture hall

3 p.m.: Children's theater with students from the Japanese School Hamburg, Gewölbesaal

4 pm: Shin Buyo - modern dance performance with musical accompaniment by the Laeiszhalle Akademie with Chihoco Yanagi and the Laeiszhalle music academists, large lecture hall

Open workshops - you can join us at any time!

12 noon to 5 p.m.: Children's make-up station with Mareen Fröhlich

12 noon to 5 p.m.: Origami craft workshop for children and families. Make Japanese koi fish out of paper. Accompanied by Akiko Probst from the Akiko Store Hamburg
