CHOREOGRAPHY (Ausstellung)

In the organizer's words:

Video installation (without sound) by Hyejeong Yoo

Vernissage on 9.3. at 17:30. Afterwards the exhibition can be visited until 28.3. every Tue-Fri / 11am-5pm, Sat / 12pm-4pm as well as during other events at the Cinémathèque. Free admission.

On the borderline between performance and authenticity, CHOREOGRAPHY shows the subtle tension of being observed. Each vertical monitor shows a human/animal pair that reflects contemporary digital documentation: One person sits motionless on a sofa with their dog, their gaze fixed on the camera, creating a tableau vivant that blurs the line between video and photography. While the people embody deliberate motionlessness, their dogs move naturally, shifting from indifference to curiosity as they seek interaction with their companions.
The contemplative atmosphere of the installation is created by these arranged scenes in which human self-confidence meets animal spontaneity. The human bodies become living sculptures - despite their physical presence, they inhabit a constructed moment, their stillness is both real and artificial, a learned reaction to the camera's gaze. At the same time, the animal companions that pass through these moments with natural dynamism reveal a presence that goes beyond learned self-expression.

Artist

Hyejeong Yoo (b. 1992, Seoul) is a photographer living and working in Leipzig, Germany. She graduated in 2024 as a master student at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig under the supervision of Prof. Heidi Specker.

Yoo's work explores themes of alterity and the cyclical nature of life and death, which she expresses through minimalist, meticulously composed photographs and video works. Her practice opens up a performative dimension that invites viewers into silent, introspective spaces. Yoo's visual language is characterized by a poetic interplay of natural light, a suggestive stillness and the haunting emptiness that becomes palpable in the gazes of her protagonists.

She has participated in various group exhibitions in Europe and Korea, including gute aussichten at Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2023), Fotohof Calling in Salzburg (2022) and Treues Herz at Goethe-Institut Seoul (2022). In 2022, she deepened her exploration of the theme of absence in Graz, Austria, supported by Camera Austria and Kulturvermittlung Steiermark.
