Sometimes the internet writes particularly beautiful success stories - such as that of singer-songwriter Carter Vail, whose career began on social media and has since developed into a unique indie rock experience.
Born and raised in small Wilton, Connecticut, Vail discovered his enthusiasm for a wide variety of musical styles and instruments at an early age. He deepened his passion by studying audio engineering at the University of Miami before setting up his own music studio with friends in Nashville - the music capital of the USA.
While still a student, Vail began to develop his songwriting and production skills. Along the way, he created an original niche with humorous mini-songs and comedy sketches about increasingly absurd topics. Along the way, he released his first original songs, including his debut single "Melatonin" in 2018, which quickly became an insider tip on the indie pop-rock scene.
Initially, Vail wanted to keep his sketches and his own music strictly separate, but he soon realized how much fun he had integrating his humour into his song lyrics. His mini-songs on social media not only taught him self-irony, but also shaped his creative ease and unique style.
On his album "Red Eyes", released in 2020, he processed the experiences of his student days and the transition into adult life. The two EPs "The Interstellar Tennis Championship Vol 1." and "Vol 2." were less autobiographical: the imaginative lyrics are about a man who is beamed from Earth to different galaxies to play intergalactic tennis matches. Here, the bizarre ideas of his sketch songs flowed into a well thought-out concept album.
After Carter Vail moved from Nashville to Los Angeles in 2023, a difficult phase began for him following a painful separation. But he found new strength and inspiration in music: he teamed up with friend and co-producer Noah Tauscher for a month, resulting in his second album "100 Cowboys" (2024), which packs his negative feelings into lively melodies and tongue-in-cheek Western allusions. This album is the most honest and mature work of his career, yet still delights with its typical humor and catchy songs.
