Two Carmen evenings in one season, is that necessary? Don't we already know everything about this irrepressibly independent woman, who for many has become the epitome of the seductively unfaithful femme fatale? Theater Magdeburg says: No, there is still something new to discover - about the character herself, about the opera that made her immortal and about the composer who created this fascinatingly exotic cosmos. Julien Chavaz will stage Georges Bizet's opera in the fall, followed by two choreographic perspectives in one evening in the spring.
While Jörg Mannes deals with a modern ballet classic - the ballet music by Rodion Shchedrin also refers musically to Bizet's model - guest choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen explores the conditions of an artist's success and failure on a more abstract level. The starting point is the fate of Georges Bizet himself, who died just a few weeks after the disastrous premiere of his opera and did not live to see its worldwide success.
