During a school trip, three schoolgirls disappear in an impassable mountain massif. Days later, two men who happened to be watching the picnic party find one of the young women among the rocks. She remembers nothing, and there is no trace of the other two missing girls.

Chaotic crisis management by the school management, unsuccessful police work and the anger and despair of the relatives, fueled by the sensationalism of the media and rampant conspiracy theories, shake the orderly world of the strictly conservative college and increasingly affect the whole country.

In her cult novel Picnic on Valentine's Day, Australian author Joan Lindsay tells the story of a young generation's upheavals and outbursts, of the claim to a self-determined life in an imploding social system. With their mysterious disappearance, the three young people pose a riddle to the adult world that we are all challenged to solve.
