Brahms is number one - master pianist Sir András Schiff and his compatriot Iván Fischer obviously agree on that. Or is it a coincidence that their WDK program not only exclusively features works by Johannes Brahms - but also only "one works" by the Viennese by choice? Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 1 are, of course, repertoire classics whose presence on the program of a top orchestra like the Budapest Festival Orchestra will come as no surprise to anyone. But the selected Hungarian Dances are thought-provoking: Number 1 - well, yes, well known. But number 11? This dance, for all its calm, flowing beauty, is definitely not standard repertoire, so there must be a method to the one. And it also points to the quality of the concert experience. Because with this program and these artists, the concert can only be - exactly - one: ... (see above).
