Hein's new novel tells the story of Grischa Tannberg, a young GDR economist who develops a plan to financially stabilize the GDR by selling Afghan cannabis to West Berliners.

A bit of weed, an ingenious coup and the miracle of Bavaria - Jakob Hein's absurdly funny novel about one of Germany's greatest mysteries: How did the East Germans once persuade Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauß to save their bankrupt country with a billion-euro loan? A wonderfully wacky story with one of the most relaxed heroes in literature.

His boss would never have dreamed that Grischa, of all people, this shy assistant to the planning commission, would be prone to subversion and come up with an - admittedly - rather ingenious plan to get their ailing business a new, surprisingly good source of finance. Whereby 'store' in this case stands for an entire country.

Perhaps it was because Grischa has a somewhat idiosyncratic taste in movies, in which American drug mafia thrillers intersect with socialist heroic epics?

In any case, Grisha's boss can't stop being amazed, and all sorts of old ministers in the Central Committee are amazed with him. Shortly afterwards, however, the West Berlin police chief was most astonished when tumultuous scenes took place at the Invalidenstrasse border crossing, on the wrong (!) side. Hundreds of young people wanted to cross over to the East, as if magic were involved. When the government in Bonn gets wind of this, the situation becomes dicey.

But then the East makes the West an offer it can't refuse!

Jakob Hein, born in Leipzig in 1971, works as a psychiatrist. He has published numerous books, including Mein erstes T-Shirt (2001), Herr Jensen steigt aus (2006), Wurst und Wahn (2011), Kaltes Wasser (2016) and Die Orient-Mission des Leutnant Stern (2018). His book Hypochondriacs Live Longer and Other Good News from My Psychiatric Practice (2020) was on the SPIEGEL bestseller list for weeks after its publication. His most recent novel Der Hypnotiseur oder Nie so glücklich wie im Reich der Gedanken was published in spring 2022.
