You can hear in Julian Schmidt's fine piano playing that he has intensively studied jazz piano role models such as Wynton Kelly and Sonny Clark. This evening focuses on the music of Cedar Walton, a leading pianist of the hard bop era, including three years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Various of Walton's compositions - such as "Bolivia" - have become classics in the jazz literature.

BE MY GUEST #11
Tradition ahead!
At a time when jazz legends such as Sonny Rollins and Roy Haynes are approaching 100, it is noticeable that some of the young jazz generation are consciously engaging with the tradition of improvised music. The 11th Be My Guest season presents predominantly young people who have already left the label "talent" behind them. Look forward to seven concerts with youthful vigor and conscious reference to the great, rich past of jazz!
