In the Face of War - European Dialogues

Representatives of institutions from Europe on supporting artists in exile

In recent years, many artists who have fled their countries to escape conflict have been welcomed to Europe as part of artist residencies or scholarship programs. Nevertheless, their needs are primarily humanitarian in nature. It's about coming to terms with trauma and loss, reorganizing everyday life, gaining or clarifying status, perhaps learning a new language...

How have cultural institutions, which are prepared to host artists for a limited period of time to accompany their work and provide a framework, adapted to dealing with emergencies for which they were not prepared? How to accompany the end of the residency if the reasons for exile have not changed? How can it be ensured that the measures taken actually meet the needs? And how can we imagine a future in which the number of exile situations is likely to increase? Representatives of European cities and institutions that have been involved in hosting artists in exile in recent years share their experiences and take stock: How did they organize themselves in the emergency situation? What worked? What are the most complex challenges? Which collaborations should be established with social actors? How can we ensure that the artists, who come in a context of great vulnerability with humanitarian needs, remain artists or become artists again as quickly as possible?

The event series In the Face of War - European Dialogues, initiated by the Institut français, deals with the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the European continent. The project focuses on the question of European narratives and their reception. After stops in Prague, Vilnius, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Sofia, Warsaw and Rennes, it is now Leipzig's turn.

Event in cooperation with the Leipzig Book Fair.

Various events are planned at the Leipzig Book Fair and in the city on 28.03.2025.
