Ausstellung Sina Heffner: Symbionten

In the organizer's words:

Sina Heffner's initial interest is the relationship between humans, animals and nature, which she explores in drawings, photographs, installations and sculptures in public spaces. Her preoccupation with animals starts with our conception of nature and images of nature and questions their order. Her exhibition "Symbionts" also deals with this area of tension. Symbionts are animals, plants or microorganisms that interact and complement each other, i.e. two different elements that are brought together to form a new whole - a process that is central to the works in the Raum für Freunde.

The series of drawings "From Travelogues" (since 2024) is reminiscent of nature studies, of the meticulous depictions in historical botany books. However, Heffner creates the plants in her drawings and combines plants and animals: one element arises from the other and the individual parts are mutually dependent. The series was inspired by the artist's fascination with historical sources that show people's relationship to nature at the time. These include early travelogues by Europeans from distant lands, which reveal their curiosity about unknown landscapes. In medieval books, the so-called "bestiaries", for example, we find detailed depictions of animals that coexist on an equal footing with mythical creatures. These visualizations were often the only way to get an impression of exotic animals. The animals were usually only known to the illustrators from stories - which often led to certain errors. Scales became feathers and proportions shifted.

The installation "Ausschnitte" (2025) is the sculptural continuation of the "Aus Reiseberichten" series. The monochrome sculptures look like landscape cut-outs that have been planted in the space for friends and now occupy it. The forms move on the threshold between the animal and plant worlds and merge into one another. They are reminiscent of gazelle heads or tentacles as well as ferns and mushrooms. The installation illustrates Sina Heffner's interest in space and the position of humans, animals and plants in it and the meanings that arise as a result. Another expansive work by the artist that deals with these aspects has already been on display in Wolfsburg for 15 years: the sculpture "Giraffe" on Klieversberg near the planetarium.
