6th Philharmonic Concert / Johannes Brahms/Luciano Berio: Clarinet Sonata No. 1 in F minor op. 120/1 / Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 in E minor op. 93

Farewell sounds: Shortly before his death, Johannes Brahms wrote two sonatas for clarinet and piano in 1894. They are, so to speak, a farewell to his instrumental compositions - there is something wistful about the works. The Italian composer Luciano Berio, who died in 2003, arranged the first of the two sonatas, and for him the sound is in the foreground: large orchestra instead of chamber music.

The 10th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich is the first major composition after the death of Russian dictator Josef Stalin. Premiered in 1953, the work is seen as a reckoning with the Stalin regime. A "picture of madness" - according to musicologist Bernd Feuchtner about the first movement of the work.
