Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich, the first choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, celebrated its premierein1982. Fase consists of three duets and a solo , choreographed to four repetitive compositions by the American minimalist Steve Reich. De Keersmaeker uses the structure of Reich's music to develop an independent movement language that not only illustrates the music , but adds a new dimension to it. Both music and dance are based on the principle of phase shifting through minute variations: Movements that are initially perfectly synchronized gradually begin to slip and slide , creating a sophisticated play of ever-changing shapes and patterns.
The four compositions by Steve Reich Piano Phase (1967), Come Out (1966), Violin Phase (1967) and Clapping Music (1972) are considered pioneering works of minimalism, which have influenced many different styles of music to this day through their repetitive patterns and phase shifts. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who has always danced Fase herself , passed the work on to two new dancers for the first time in its history in2018 as part of a portrait at the FestivalD'Automne in Paris. After an absence of more than a decade , the Belgian choreographer is now returning to Munich to present one of her most important works.
