4th Chamber Concert / Kerry Turner: Sonata for Horn and Strings / Johannes Brahms: Two Songs for Alto Voice, Viola and Piano op. 91

Kerry Drew Turner, born in Texas in 1960, began composing at the age of ten. After successfully passing the American Piano Teacher's Guild music theory exam, he submitted a wind quintet at the age of twelve, which won first prize. By the end of his school years, he had already composed two symphonies, a mass, seven symphonic tone poems and a string quartet. The sonata for horn and piano is now part of the standard horn repertoire all over the world.

Inspired by friendship and love, Johannes Brahms composed the "Two Songs": his friendship with his long-time companion, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms wanted to create a musical memorial to their bond - he wrote the "Geistliches Wiegenlied" for his wedding, based on a text by Emanuel Geibel. However, he later withdrew the composition and revised it. Together with "Gestillte Sehnsucht" on a text by Friedrich Rückert, Brahms then publishes both songs on the occasion of another joyful moment: the christening of his godchild, Joseph Joachim's son. The irrepressible joy of life that comes from love is evident in both compositions.
