André Schulze - "Mona Lisa with Cigarette"

With "Mona Lisa with Cigarette", André Schulze invites us on a fascinating journey through art history and the present. His works take up iconic images and alienate them with irony and precision: the Mona Lisa appears with a pixelated face and a burning cigarette - a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the digital era and the iconization of the old masters. Alongside his characteristic pixelated bouquets, Schulze presents historical paintings, which he reworks in great detail and places in a new context. A supposed Picasso presents a particular puzzle: Only the signed reverse side is visible, while the front remains a secret - it is only revealed by the buyer.

The exhibition space itself also plays with art history. Targeted staging creates the feeling of being in a museum of the old masters - until you realize that nothing here has been left untouched. Schulze combines classical art with subtle interventions and playfully questions the handling of historical works. Past and present enter into a dialog that makes the viewer think.

"Mona Lisa with Cigarette" is a homage to art history - and an artistic play with its myths.
