"I have no desire to practise an art where you have to leave your brain in the checkroom."
Hanns Eisler, 1962
HANNS EISLER (1898-1962) - Austrian, Schönberg pupil, composer of political music, social idealist, theorist - always tried to change things with his music. His songs were sung by the masses, his film music reinforced the
his music theory speeches and writings questioned the understanding of music and music production down to the last detail.
The moderated concert provides an insight into Eisler's chamber music and choral works by means of selected pieces. The close collaboration between Hanns Eisler and Erwin Ratz in the early 1930s is evident in the selection of songs and lieder based on Brecht texts. Ratz also edited Die Mutter (1931) and Die Rundköpfe und die Spitzköpfe (1934), among others. In turn, Die Reisesonate (1937) tells of the many stages of his many years of exile. Other musical highlights include parts of the film music from the socially critical documentary The Forgotten Village, two clarinet solo pieces from the play Night Music by Clifford Odets (1939) and Eisler's short dedication composition for a clarinettist friend Moment Musical (1940).
