"My style isn't jazzy enough for the jazzers, but not easy enough for the easy listeners," says Alfa Mist. What sounds like a curse has actually become the British musician's recipe for success. With his melodic jazz and soft beats, the self-taught pianist has been able to win over whole hordes of young fans who previously had no idea that jazz could be so soulful. When Alfa Sekitoleko was still a teenager in East London, he uploaded self-made grime tracks to Soundcloud, but also improvised in jazz style: "I just pressed keys at random and saw which ones went together nicely." Under his alias Alfa Mist, it has been a perfect match for ten years: catchy piano melodies meet intuitive grooves and free-flowing jazz improvisations. Alfa Mist thus casually references the funk jazz of the seventies, but also the head-nodding beatmaking of the nineties.
