Alberto Grandi präsentiert „Mythos Nationalgericht“

The Italian Cultural Institute Cologne is organizing a meeting with Alberto Grandi to present the German version of his book Denominazione di origine inventata (Mondadori, 2018), translated by Andrea Kunstmann and published by Harper Collins with the title Mythos Nationalgericht. The invented traditions of Italian cuisine .

The meeting in Italian with simultaneous translation will be moderated by Tommaso Pedicini and will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 7 pm in the Theatersaal of the Italian Cultural Institute Cologne.

In the book with its slightly provocative title, Grandi, who teaches food history at the University of Parma, demonstrates how much marketing is behind the resounding success of the Italian food industry. He shows that the historical and wise legends that surround so many characteristic products are in fact quite recent and can be traced back to the industrial crisis of the 1970s, when Italian entrepreneurs and farmers joined forces and invented a centuries-long tradition and history for typical Italian dishes. Denominazione di origine inventata is a work that deepens the knowledge of Italian cuisine without the fear of no longer loving it.

Alberto Grandi (Mantua 1967) is Professor of Economic History at the University of Parma, where he teaches the history of food and the history of European integration. In recent years, he has published popular science books such as Denominazione di Origine Inventata (Mondadori 2018), Parla mentre mangi (Mondadori 2019) and L'incredibile storia della neve e della sua scomparsa (Aboca 2022). His podcast "DOI - Denominazione di Origine Inventata" has also been a great success on the most important online distribution platforms.

Born in Merano (BZ) in 1971, Tommaso Pedicini moved to Germany after studying philosophy, where he began working as a journalist. Since 2007, he has worked as editor-in-chief for COSMO italiano at WDR, where he also coordinates the other foreign-language programs.
