To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, the Hafenmuseum Bremen is presenting research findings on Albert Speer until May 4, 2025 that refute his lie that he knew nothing about the Holocaust. The exhibition was developed by the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds and expanded for Bremen to include Speer's role in the Hanseatic city. It is being shown together with the Bremen State Center for Political Education and in cooperation with the Bremer Zentrum für Baukultur und Erinnern für die Zukunft e.V. (Bremen Center for Building Culture and Remembrance for the Future).
As a leading architect and armaments minister, Albert Speer was one of the main perpetrators of the Nazi regime. After his release from prison, however, he spread the lie that he had known nothing about the crimes and had been involved in the war through no fault of his own. This narrative was readily accepted by society for a long time. The exhibition debunks the Speer legend and focuses on the question of why it resonated so strongly in West Germany for decades. Interviews with experts, photos and documents provide comprehensive answers. At the same time, they raise questions about references to current debates.
