DARIUS MILHAUD Le bœuf sur le toit
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 3 in G major K. 216
JOHANNES BRAHMS Symphony No. 4 in E minor
Introduction 30 minutes before the start of each concert in the main hall
From 1916, Darius Milhaud spent two years in Brazil. Fascinated by the musical folklore, the fiery rhythms and lively sounds, he composed the ballet Le bœuf sur le toit in 1919 as a musical souvenir. The piece became so famous that it inspired one of the most popular cabarets in Paris. Mozart's 3rd Violin Concerto is equally successful. His biographer Alfred Einstein even describes it as a "miracle", especially the second movement, which sounds like it "fell from heaven". In addition to the humorous exuberance typical of Mozart, the work captivates with its elegant beauty and sparkling lightness, creating an extraordinarily harmonious dance between soloist and orchestra. Johannes Brahms is also known for his love of detail. He wrote his 4th Symphony during his summer vacation in Styria. But as exhilarating as it sounds, Brahms has doubts about his composition. It tastes "of the local climate - the cherries here are not sweet", he writes to a friend, probably referring to the tart and elegiac character of the symphony. It was his last contribution to this genre and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed orchestral works today.
