When teacher Herman wakes up on the last day of his vacation, his wife and child have disappeared. At the same time, instead of sunny weather, thick fog dominates the landscape, making everything invisible. Herman sets off for the nearby town to report the loss - and wanders through the town for a long time: as a stranger par excellence.
Herman stays one day too long in the vacation idyll - and already everything is distant and unrecognizable to him. The great, eloquent narrator Marie NDiaye describes "with her undisguised and melodious voice" (Iris Radisch) the melancholy abandonment of a person to whom everything has become alien: fellow human beings, environment, family. Thrown back on himself, Herman reinvents himself and the world: the outcome is open.✨
