35. Landesweite Kunstschau

unANGEBRACHT

Under the title UNANGEBRACHT, the 35th state-wide art exhibition of the BBK M-V will take place from January 26 to March 23, 2025 in the Kunsthalle Rostock and the documentation and memorial site in the former Stasi remand prison. It is dedicated to the tension between the constitutionally guaranteed freedom to practice, teach and communicate art and its restrictions. After all, art is a factor in democratic society that should not be underestimated.

The art show will also make reference to the exhibition Kate Diehn-Bitt, KünstlerinSEIN in collaboration with Susanne Rast, which is taking place at the same time in the Kunsthalle Rostock and presents works by the important painter. Suffering from a work ban and internal emigration under National Socialism, Diehn-Bitt remained courageous and refused to be appropriated or banned. In 1945, she became chairwoman of the Fine Arts Section of the Cultural Association for the Democratic Renewal of Germany in Rostock. This organization later became the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR. In 1990, its district associations in Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg gave rise to the Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania Artists' Association, now the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Professional Association of Visual Artists (BBK M-V).

Nevertheless, Diehn-Bitt also came up against limits during the GDR era and had to deal with restrictions.

For the first time, the Berufsverband Bildender Künstlerinnen und Künstler Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. and the Kunsthalle Rostock are cooperating with the documentation and memorial site in the former pre-trial detention center of the State Security Rostock. Since its foundation in October 1999, this has developed into an important place of information and documentation about the SED dictatorship and commemoration of its victims.

The exhibition UNANGEBRACHT shows works by 50 artists and is curated by art historian Tereza de Arruda.

A wide variety of artistic forms of expression such as paintings, objects, installations, performances and site-specific interventions will be presented. These works are the result of an intensive socio-political exchange that addresses current issues, reflects on historical and personal pasts and looks to future perspectives on the freedom of art.
