100 Jahre Literaturarchiv Monacensia

In the organizer's words:

Symposium: Institutional histories and archives of the future:

In 1924, full-time city library director Hans Ludwig Held (1885-1954) began collecting manuscripts by famous writers*, laying the foundations for today's Monacensia literary archive, the literary memory of the city of Munich.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, we are reviewing the last 100 years. Historical, political and social contexts play a role in the collection and communication of holdings. Managers and employees also have a decisive influence on the creation and preservation of archive material. It is therefore important for memory institutions to critically reflect on their own history and to make the processing transparent.

For several years now, the Monacensia has been consciously addressing the question of whose literary work we collect in the archive and shedding light on the gaps. Why, for example, are female, queer, non-white and migrant perspectives missing from our archive and how can we close the gaps? And why does a diverse society need a diverse culture of remembrance?

To mark the anniversary, we are conducting critical research into the history of the Monacensia as part of an in-house project and presenting our findings at the symposium. We invite researchers and companions to share their perspectives. We will also take a look into the archive of the future.
