There are lots of associations and initiatives in Munich that do good and are looking for volunteers. Whether you have a lot or just a little time to spare, they would love your support. But how do you find the right one? Ideally, you would like to get involved everywhere... 🥺

We have gained an overview and introduce you to some Munich organizations that you can get involved with. We spoke to those responsible about their work. 🌼

Münchner Tafel e.V

What are you doing?

"The Münchner Tafel has been providing Munich residents in need with rescued food for 1994 years.

There are currently over 23,000 Tafel guests who are fed every week, including around 7,000 children. Every week, 180,000 kilograms of perfectly good food is rescued and passed on to citizens living below the poverty line at 30 distribution points and around 100 social institutions in the city."

How can I take part?

"To ensure all this, around 1,000 volunteers work all year round in all weathers to carry out the valuable work of our private and independent association, which is financed purely by donations.

If you would like to donate your time to us (as a driver, passenger, at a distribution point or for a buy-one-more campaign), you can find all the information you need on our homepage!"

KulturRaum München e.V.

What are you doing?

"KulturRaum München has set itself the goal of creating access to culture for everyone in the city - regardless of origin, age or budget.

For many people, a major obstacle to participating in the social life of a city like Munich is a lack of financial means. This is why Munich residents on low incomes can register with KulturRaum.

The volunteers of the non-profit organization arrange free tickets for cultural events for people who would otherwise not be able to afford them. A visit to the theater, cinema or concert can be a ray of hope. One of the KulturGäste says: 'KulturRaum has made my life much more worth living and more valuable to me again!"

How can I take part?

"You can get involved with the association primarily as a mediator:in the free cultural offerings. This mediation takes place on the phone or on site at lunch tables and food distribution points of the Tafel.

It's a great voluntary position for Munich residents interested in culture who want to get involved in society and promote cultural participation."

Bellevue di Monaco

What are you doing?

"We are a cooperatively organized residential, cultural and support center for refugees - in the middle of Munich.

We offer refugees advice, networking, leisure and cultural activities, learning support, training support, language courses and much more. With open offers such as our weekly Open House, we want to help people from Munich and all over the world to get to know each other.

We want to bring the issues of refugees and asylum to the center of the city - where they belong. We want to use our privileges and use our commitment to help people arrive here and feel welcome."

How can I take part?

"You can join in too! For example, as part of a training team, in open learning support, in asylum counseling, as a language partner or as a tutoring partner for primary school children.

We always provide information on the first Monday of the month in our info room about how you can get actively involved. You can also find an overview of the various projects on our website."

Open work with the disabled (OBA)

What are you doing?

"We are the Open Services of Lebenshilfe München e.V. and are based in Obergiesing, but you can find us all over Munich and even abroad. Namely where we go on excursions or travel.

Our main task is to organize leisure activities together with people with and without disabilities. We have a lot to offer, both after work and at the weekend! If you're bored in your everyday life and need a change of pace, you've come to the right place."

How can I take part?

"We are looking for volunteers who would like to go to the theater, go hiking, enjoy cooking together, are open to city trips or would like to spend a week's vacation in Croatia... And all this together in groups with people with and without disabilities.

We are also looking for volunteers who would like to support families. You can go on short trips with a child, help with homework, pick the child up from school and accompany them to therapy and much more."

InitiativGruppe e.V.

What are you doing?

"We are committed to educational equality . Our aim is to promote the equal participation of people with migration and refugee biographies in Munich. People from all over the world come together in the InitiativGruppe. In our association, we promote mutual understanding and thus contribute to open-minded coexistence .

We support many integration projects, e.g. German and integration courses, student support, vocational orientation and qualification, intercultural child and youth work. We promote civic engagement and self-help."

How can I take part?

"Civic engagement was the starting point of the InitiativGruppe and is still an essential part of our work today; we are all united by our interest in shaping an open society based on solidarity.

You can become active with us as a volunteer:

• Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen, die Schwierigkeiten mit der deutschen Sprache oder in verschiedenen Schulfächern haben
• Leseförderung von Kindern
• Unterstützung von jungen Erwachsenen beim Erlernen der deutschen Sprache, der Berufsausbildung und der beruflichen Integration

Green City e.V.

What are you doing?

"Green City e.V. is committed to a green, liveable and sustainable Munich.

Together with citizens, the association is shaping the sustainable and climate-neutral city of tomorrow!"

How can I take part?

" There are numerous opportunities to support Green City e.V. on a voluntary basis:

Whether working in community gardens, accompanying events as a photographer, helping to promote the association or participating in social media work - together we are mastering the climate crisis!"

Freunde alter Menschen e.V.

What are you doing?

"Nobody wants to live alone and isolated. But that is precisely the reality for many elderly people in Munich. Most of them were left behind when their partners died. Many of them are threatened or affected by loneliness. Some of the elderly people living alone can no longer leave their homes or can only do so with help from others.

The association Freunde alter Menschen e.V. therefore establishes visiting partnerships between young and old people. The volunteers regularly visit an elderly person. Each visiting partnership is professionally supervised by employees of the association. We are committed to building lasting friendships based on mutual respect. We find out who might be a good match through personal discussions."

How can I take part?

"Would you like to join in and get to know a new old friend? Are you a good judge of character and want to bring young and old together? Do you really thrive on teamwork? Planning and organization are your hobbyhorse, organizing events is a piece of cake for you? Do you have a soft spot for social media? Do you enjoy writing texts and are sociable? We look forward to getting to know you!"

Animal Help Espania e.V.

What are you doing?

"We are a Munich-based animal welfare organization with partner animal shelters in Spain. The number of homeless cats and dogs in Spain is immense, the animal shelters are often overloaded and in need of support. That is why we are involved in various areas.

We collect donations and provide financial aid, especially in cases of emergency or disaster and castration campaigns. These are particularly important to counteract the proliferation of stray animals. We also help our Spanish partners to place cats and dogs in Germany. We regularly travel to Spain to see whether our commitment is bearing fruit and also lend a hand on site."

How can I take part?

"There are many ways to get involved in improving animal welfare with us. For example, in organizational tasks related to the placement process or in the planning and implementation of fundraising campaigns.

What we urgently need are foster homes in the greater Munich area for cats and dogs. To relieve the pressure on the full animal shelters in Spain, the foster homes take in animals until they have found their forever home."
